A lot has changed in the past months. First of all, “Roll it!” for iPhone still selling well all over the world, with over 2400 people having downloaded it (since the launch in December). I receive a lot of positive feedback and the game currently ranks in the top 20 of dice games in 5 countries. Additionally, with the upcoming iPhone 4.0 and features like Game Center, stay tuned for exciting new features.

Also, “Roll it!” for iPad made its way into the AppStore and was available since the iPad US-launch on April 3rd. New high-resolution graphics, a 3D splash screen and a landscape mode make the game even more fun to play.

This post shows examples and explains what you plugins you might need.

Task 2: 3D-Cube with Textures

Processing offers great options when it comes to 3D. This applet uses the vertex function to draw the six cube surfaces. In photoshop, I created the textures and applied them to the surfaces.

You can use the mouse to rotate the cube.

.

Task 4: Tracking Shot

The goal of this example is to show how the camera function can be used to adjust the viewer’s position. Animated, this gives you the impression of a tracking shot.

Task 5: Tracking Shot 3D

This is basically the same exercise as Task 4, except this time I imported a 3D model. There was a nice model of a ladybird I found on oyonale.com. To load OBJ into processing, an OBJ loader like the SAITO OBJ loader is needed.

.

This weeks post is all about video. We create a very cool video player with some 3D effects, a video recorder and ultimately a little programm that allows you to track objects based on their color.

Task 2: Video Player

We had to create a small video player which moves/rotates the video in the three dimensions. Depending on the mouse position, I implemented a rotation around the Y-axis when the cursor is on the left half of the applet. When the mouse is on the right part, the video is moved.

HINT: When trying to replay videos, make sure that you set the P3D parameter in the size-function, so for example size(300,300,P3D). Video playback did not work for me without it.

Movie playback somehow seems not to work in the browser. You can download the ZIP-archive here.

Task 3: Video recorder

For this simple video recorder, I took the animation from a previous exercise (confetti) and added a way to record the animation as a movie. The following functions are supported:

a: Start and stop recording

s: Play the movie

d: Pause the movie

w: Stop the movie

You can download the ZIP-archive here.

Task 4+5: Brightness / color tracking

The program let’s you define a color by clicking somewhere inside the image. Then, every pixel gets compared with your chosen color. If they are somewhat similar (you can define the tolerance), the pixel will be considered as part of your object. The center will be calculated and the motion tracking is overlayed instantly.

For the sake of elegance, paths get “faded” out. The following key function can be used:

t: Increase tolerance

z: Decrease tolerance

e: Toggle ellipse

r: Toggle trace display

You can download the ZIP-archive here.
